Types of Transmission Media
Optical Fibre:
Definition- Made out of thin strands of glass or plastic, Fiber Optics refers to the medium and the technology associated with the transmission of information as light pulses along a glass fibre strand and sends information in a coded beam of light down a plastic tube. It is usually used for large volumes of data.
Examples: Telecommunication and Computer Networking, Cable TV and high-speed broadband services.
Wired:
Definition- Wired Media can also be referred to as Guided Media and transmit signals directed and confined in a narrow pathway through a physical links. There are three types of Wired media. These being, Twisted Pair Cable, Shielded Twisted pair and a Coaxial Cable.
Examples: Standard Computer Network.
Wireless:
Definition- Wireless Media can also be referred to as Unguided Media or unbounded Transmission. Meaning Physical Mediums are not necesary for the transmission of electromagnetic signals. And can be divided into three types. Radio-waves, Microwaves and Infrared.
Examples: Broadcast radio, Cellular radio, Communications satellite, Microwaves, Bluetooth, etc.
